NEW ORLEANS – On Sunday, March 13, 2022, Tiana Hux’s soul-spiked art rock outfit Malevitus celebrates the Houma Records vinyl reissue of their eponymous album with “If You Have Ghosts,” an immersive, deconstructed musical featuring songs from the record.
Equal parts rock show, play, dance performance, and vintage cocktail party, “If You Have Ghosts” plunges the audience into a world of luxury and sensuality, set to a Malevitus soundtrack and accompanied by local aerial troupe The Flying Buttresses.
The band invites attendees to don their finest cocktail hour ensembles and become guests at a gathering inside the stately home of a Garden District matriarch. There, beneath the scenic canopy of St. Charles Avenue oak trees, and inside the historic mansion the Columns, partygoers will enjoy craft cocktails from Seven-Three Distilling and hors d'oeuvres by Columns chef, Paul Terrebonne.
Once the party and performance get underway, however, guests become privy to the inner turmoil plaguing our hostess. The elegant atmosphere she's created is repeatedly disrupted by her mischievous son and daughter - not to mention an encroaching swarm of shadowy spirits. It's not long before a psychological battle of wills unfolds between the lady of the house, her children, and those pesky ghosts.
“If You Have Ghosts” is site-specific and uses music and visual storytelling to probe questions around excess, escapism, and the burden of family secrets. The location, architecture, and natural light become elements of the performance. Hux explored This interplay in her Storyville brothel-inspired show at The New Quorum, “A Day Late and a Dollar Short,” in 2019.
“A Day Late and a Dollar Short” used characters and narratives Hux rapped about on her MC Sweet Tea recording, “Story.”
Her 2010 Hip-Hopera, “Animal Ball,” used the backdrops of Preservation Hall and Voodoo Fest to create a musical fairytale about a runaway animal struggling to find their way home. “If You Have Ghosts” takes a different tack, but still reflects Hux’s unique performance aesthetic.
“It’s as if Tennessee Williams had written an improv for Anne Sexton with a rock band in a Felini movie,” she says. “Come for the music, cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Stay for the psychodrama.”
